ELISA for the Screening of Food for Nitrofurazone Residues
The MaxSignal® Nitrofurazone (SEM) ELISA Kit provides a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of nitrofurazone in feed, fish, shrimp, meat, honey, milk, serum and urine.
The MaxSignal® Nitrofurazone (SEM) ELISA Kit is based on a competitive colorimetric ELISA assay. The SEM antibody has been coated in the plate wells. During the analysis, sample is added along with the SEM-horseradish peroxidase (SEM-HRP) conjugate. If the SEM residue is present in the sample, it will compete for the SEM antibody, thereby preventing the SEM-HRP from binding to the antibody attached to the well. The resulting color intensity, after addition of the HRP substrate (TMB), has an inverse relationship with the SEM residue concentration in the sample.
One Extraction, Analyze Multiple Nitrofurans
To reduce the time and costs associated with sample extraction, Bioo Scientific has developed a single protocol that can be used for testing samples with all of our ELISAs for the detection of nitrofuran antibiotics. Now you can take one sample, perform one extraction and test for AHD, SEM, AMOZ and AOZ.
Nitrofurazone belongs to the class of 5-nitrofuran antibiotics and has been widely and effectively used for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. in cattle, pigs and poultry. It was also used as a growth promoter in food-producing animals. However, both WHO and the European Union (EU) are unable to assign a maximum residue limit for nitrofurazone because of the potential carcinogenic effects of its residues on human health. As a consequence, the administration of nitrofurazone to food-producing animals has been prohibited. Because of the rapid excretion of the nitrofurans and their instability in vitro and in vivo, it is impossible to monitor residues of the parent drug nitrofurazone directly. Alternatively, semicarbazide (SEM), the major metabolite of nitrofurazone, which is stable in tissue, even after long-term storage, is selected to monitor.
