Rapid One-step ELISA for Sensitive Streptomycin Detection
The MaxSignal® Streptomycin ELISA Test Kit is a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of streptomycin and in a variety of sample types. This kit incorporates a one-step format requiring less time (50 minutes), reduced reagent preparation time, and fewer steps that a traditional two-step ELISA assay.
Streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin belong to a group of carbohydrate-containing antibiotics called aminoglycosides. All the aminoglycosides are potentially toxic compounds causing significant damage in vestibular and auditory functions in human as well as in animals. Nevertheless, they are used in practice because of their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Residues of streptomycin may therefore occur in food of animal origin, if the withholding period is not obeyed or if it is used improperly. High concentrations of streptomycin show ototoxic and nephrotoxic effects. Low concentrations in food may cause allergies, impair the intestinal flora and favor resistant or pathogenic microorganisms. The US FDA has assigned MRLs (maximum residue limits) for (dihydro) streptomycin in swine and cattle (edible offal: 2.0 mg/kg, meat: 0.5 mg/kg, milks: 0.125 mg/kg). To protect the consumer against health risks and avoid food-technological problems, Bioo Scientific supplied a sensitive and simple method for the detection of streptomycin.
