Bioo Scientific Launches HistaStrip™ Test Kit for Detection of Histamine in Seafood, Wine and Milk

Bioo Scientific’s new HistaStrip™ Test Kit uses a novel dipstick technology for the rapid visual determination of histamine in seafood, fish meal, wine and milk. The proprietary strips can detect unsafe levels of histamine in food samples in only 4 minutes without the use of any laboratory equipment, organic solvents or heating steps.
The strips contain a pad impregnated with histamine-specific reagents which undergo a chemical reaction when it comes into contact with histamine in seafood, milk or wine. When the strips are dipped into samples containing histamine, the pad rapidly changes color to indicate the presence of the analyte. Detection capabilities using the strips are well below global action levels. The equipment-free and visual nature of the test allows convenient rapid testing in and out of the laboratory. “Our unique HistaStrip™ technology is designed to work in any environment and can be conveniently performed at any point in the supply chain from the marine dockside to the kitchen counter,” according to Dr. Joe Krebs, Director of Protein Chemistry and Engineering at Bioo Scientific.
Histamine is a contaminant sometimes found in seafood when improperly handled. Quality tuna has histamine levels below 50 ppm. High levels of histamine in seafood can cause scombroid poisoning. The amount of histamine can also be determined using ELISA or LC-MS. However, these traditional methods require very expensive equipment and time consuming sample preparation procedures.
