Drs. Franchini and Fruciano from the University of Konstanz used the NEXTflex™ 16S V4 Amplicon-Seq Kit, which permits the fast and cost-effective characterization of microbial communities, to compare the gut microbial communities in two sets of closely related species pairs of sympatric crater lake cichlid fish. This allowed the researchers to establish a base line for host-microbiota studies of cichlid fish, and to determine if the gut microbiota differed between ectomorphs.
