Rapid Strip Test for Beta-lactam Antibotic Residues in Milk

The AuroFlow™ PR1ME Beta-lactam MRL Assay is a qualitative and rapid lateral flow assay designed for the detection of a broad range of antibiotics in raw, commingled cow's milk. The PR1ME rapid tests detect 14 beta-lactam antibiotics in milk at or below EU and CODEX Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) in an ILVO-validated one-step process. The fast, simplified protocol can be seen in the next tab. Results of the test can be interpreted visually. Beta-lactam line signal intensity that is equal to or stronger than the signal at the C-line indicates a negative result. Signal at the Beta-lactam line which is less intense compared to the C-line indicates a positive result.

Beta-lactam antibiotics are a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics, consisting of all antibiotic agents that contain a beta-lactam ring in their molecular structures. This includes penicillin derivatives (penams), cephalosporins (cephems), monobactams, and carbapenems. Most beta-lactam antibiotics work by inhibiting cell wall biosynthesis in the bacterial organism, and they are the most widely used group of antibiotics.

AuroFlow™ PR1ME™ Beta-lactam MRL Assay Specs

The AuroFlow PR1ME Beta-lactam MRL Assay has the capacity for 50 (Cat # 1133-01) or 100 (Cat # 1133-02) determinations. The shelf life is 12 months when the kit is properly stored.

The positive and negative control vials contain lyophilized milk samples, and must be reconstituted with 1 mL of distilled water before use. The reconstituted raw milk controls are stable for 24 hours at 4°C.

The above diagram is for visual interpretation only. If using the QuickSTAR™ Strip Reader, refer to reader instructions provided with the unit. If the Beta-lactam line is less intense than the control line, the sample is positive for Beta-lactam antibiotics.


Invalid Results 

The test is invalid if no colored line appears in the control line area even if a colored line appears in the Beta-lactam line area. Re-test milk sample if broken lines are observed. Colored lines which appear after 10 minutes are not diagnostic and should be ignored. If the sample does not flow up the dipstick, the milk sample may be clotted, invalidating the test result. To avoid milk sample clotting, always use fresh raw milk.
