The MaxDiscovery™ Calcium Assay Kit is a plate-based colorimetric assay for the determination of calcium in serum and urine samples. The kit uses a spectrophotometric assay to detect calcium directly from samples, enabling researchers to measure calcium levels in rodent serum and urine.

Approximately 1% of the body’s total calcium is found in blood and soft tissue to serve as a necessary cofactor in metabolic and neuromuscular functions. Increased serum calcium levels are indicative of myeloma and certain cancers of the bone. Alternatively, decreased serum calcium is indicative of numerous conditions including rickets, hypoparathyroidism, and pancreatitis. The amount of calcium observed in urine collected over a 24 hour period can also help to determine other conditions, such as sarcoidosis, Paget’s disease and preeclampsia.

The MaxDiscovery™ Calcium Assay Kit is a simple, direct and automation-compatible method for measuring calcium levels in the serum and urine. This kit uses a direct colorimetric reaction scheme. Calcium reacts with cresophthalein complexone in 8-hydroxyquinoline to form a purple colored product. A buffer with stabilizers is used in the reaction to minimize interference by other metallic ions. The increase in absorbance at 550 nm is proportional to the calcium concentration in the serum or urine sample.
