MaxSignal® Streptomycin ELISA Test Kit For Honey Samples is a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin in honey. Streptomycin and Dihydrostreptomycin belong to a group of carbohydrate containing antibiotics called aminoglycosides. All the aminoglycosides are potentially toxic compounds causing significant damage in vestibular and auditory functions in human as well as in animals. Nevertheless, they are used in practice because of their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Residues of streptomycin may therefore occur in food of animal origin, if the withholding period is not obeyed or if it is used improperly. High concentrations of streptomycin show ototoxic and nephrotoxic effects. Low concentrations in food may cause allergies, impair the intestinal flora and favor resistant or pathogenic microorganisms. To protect the consumer against health risks and avoid food-technological problems, a sensitive and simple method for the detection of streptomycin is necessary.

Although physical-chemical methods such as high pressure liquid chromatography are widely used for streptomycin detection, their application for routine screening of numerous samples, however, is limited by cost and instrumentation. Alternatively, enzyme immunoassays (ELISA) show considerable advantages over conventional methods. MaxSignal® Streptomycin ELISA Test Kit For Honey Samples enables international and government regulatory agencies, food manufacturers and processors, as well as quality assurance organizations, to detect streptomycin below the maximum residue limit in honey after a rapid sample preparation and to satisfy customer concerns about food safety.
